Vintage Art Nouveau, Lighting Salvage, Pedestal or Mount, Repurpose Steampunk.
This is an old cast iron base, possibly from a light. Regardless of its original purpose, I find these pieces to be so versatile. Recycle, reuse and repurpose when it comes to these unique pieces. I have used these as a base for a statue or piece of art. Restored and repainted for  part of a new floor lamp. You could easily mount a tile, a piece of stone or marble or even a piece of decorative glass or mirror into the inset area. This one is larger than most of the bases I see. This one is made of cast metal, and it offers an intricate and beautiful Art Nouveau naturalistic design, with wonderful elegant curves to the vines. It has been painted at some point. It has chipped off on the top leaving just a black finish. The underside still has remnants of white and brown paint layers remaining. The metal is in very good condition, with no repairs, no welds, no cracks, no missing pieces, The base measures a 12" x 12" square and it stands about ½" high on the corners. The square opening in the center measures about 8" by 8" with a ¼" lip or inset going around the inside square. It weighs about 3 pounds.
