The Most Popular Mantra in Tibetan Buddhism
This is the mantra of the deity of love and compassion, Chenrezig or Avalokateshvara in the Sanskrit language, translation meaning 'Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus'.
When is the 'Om Mani Padme Hum' or the Six Syllable Mantra used?
* When the news of a death or injury is heard, to pray for a speedy recovery, precious human rebirth or a safe journey through the bardo (intermediate state).
* When blowing on meat to wish the animal a precious human rebirth next time round. This is a shortcut as there are other more extensive Buddhist prayers that can be done
* When circumambulating a Stupa, Monastery or turning prayers wheels
* Sometimes even when someone wants to change the conversation from an unwanted or negative subject! I use this one sometimes myself!
*To give blessing to animals and other beings, you can blow on them or whisper it in their ear.
*In Tibetan Buddhist meditation or retreat, this mantra can be chanted quietly or silently. I use this mantra during my daily attempts to meditate. It is short and easy to pronounce.
*It is one of the beliefs in Buddhism that saying this many, many times will lessen the chances of being born in a lower realm in the future and it is also a cause for eventual enlightenment.
