    Description

    AMOS 'n' ANDY
Autographed Photograph. FREEMAN GOSDEN and CHARLES CORRELL in blackface makeup c. 1930 episode "Change Dat Tire". Photo shows Amos (Gosden) attempting to lift the spare tire  encompassing Andy's (Correll) body over Andy's head and onto the empty rim. White actors, GOSDEN AND CORRELL had voiced the characters of Amos 'n' Andy (respectively) on radio beginning in the late 1920's. When the characters were transferred to film (as seen in photograph), Gosden and Correll performed in blackface which pleased nobody. Audiences had expected to see black actors and blackface makeup on white actors was jarring to say the least. When the radio show moved to television, the TV show was cast with black actors. In any event, the characters themselves belatedly became controversial for portraying African-Americans as dimwitted and inept. Protests from the NAACP and others led to the show's cancellation in 1953. This photograph is inscribed in blue ink "To -- Love & Kisses "Amos 'n' Andy". The handwriting is different for "Andy" than it is for "Amos" probably indicating that each character name was signed by the respective actor. 8 1/2" x 7" photograph is in very good condition having been stored in plastic sleeve for years. Photo lays flat when removed from sleeve. Reverse of photograph is blank. Signed photos of Amos 'n' Andy are highly collectible and avidly sought-after
